United Kingdom Euro Coin Collection Pattern / Prototype

The Obverse designs celebrate the UK's heritage, the scales of justice, a dove encircled by 12 clasped hands and a sailing ship, to symbolise the European ideals of peace and trade and equality.

These designs, produced by noted British sculptor Donald R. Golder, have already been proposed as replacements for the Luc Luycx maps of Europe.

The reverse side of the 1, 2, and 5 cent coins feature the enthroned monarch in a style similar to that of the gold sovereign coins of Elizabeth I and James I.

The reverse side of the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins is an equestrian representation, a tribute to the 1953 Coronation Crown of 5 Shillings - one of the last centuary's more famous numismatic masterpieces.

The Golden Hind, the flagship of Sir Francis Drake, the Elizabethan explorer who circumnavigated the world (1577-1580), is depicted on the reverse of the 1 and 2 Euro coins.

The obverse side of the 5 Euro coin depicts Britannia, The Golden Hind, the Scottish thistle and the 12 stars of the European Union.

The reverse side again depicts the 1603 unification of the English and Scottish thrones.
